The Crane Wife

THE CRANE WIFE

by Barbara Carlisle

Based on the Japanese folktale, The Crane Wife follows Kokuro, a poor villager, who stumbles upon an injured crane while in the forest. To repay his generosity, the crane returns to him in the form of a beautiful woman with a proposal to wed him. Although Kokuro does not realize that this mysterious woman is in fact his crane, their marriage receives its fair share of intrigue from the villagers. Fearful that he cannot suport his wife, he comes to her begging for help. Continuing to support her husband, the crane sacrifices portions of her feathers to weave an extraordinary cloth. As the cloth's fame spreads across the mountains, greed and gossip begin to consume Kokuro causing him to question the orgins of his wife and whether or not she is a demon in disguise.

The Crane Wife was produced in Project Spotlight's Spring One Act Festival at Theatre UCF.
